Basic Function

Under the direction of the Lead Equipment Mechanic, perform skilled work in the maintenance and repair of District vehicles and other equipment; provide emergency services to student and staff vehicles.

Representative Duties

Diagnose, repair and maintain motorized equipment such as automobiles, trucks, tractors, power lawn mowers and other mechanical equipment. E

Provide emergency services to student and staff vehicles. E

Plan, implement and perform regular repair and routine maintenance of District vehicles; perform safety checks and inspections. E

Repair and overhaul engines; replace and adjust bearings; adjust ignition and carburetors; perform minor body and radiator repair work. E

Assemble transmissions and differentials; fit pistons and rings; overhaul steering mechanisms and drive shafts. E

Reline and adjust brakes; align wheels and install axles. E

Perform electrical and acetylene welding work as required. E

Estimate labor and materials required for repairs; order parts and equipment as needed. E

Maintain simple records related to vehicle maintenance and repair work.

Train and provide work direction to assigned student workers.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Methods, tools, equipment and materials used in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Operation and maintenance of gasoline engines, chassis and parts and replacements.
  • Shop math applicable to vehicle maintenance.
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.

Ability to:
  • Perform skilled work in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other equipment.
  • Provide emergency services to student and staff vehicles.
  • Diagnose mechanical troubles.
  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment including drills, presses, grinders, reamers and welding equipment.
  • Maintain routine records.
  • Lift heavy objects.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Operate motor vehicles as needed to perform duties observing legal and defensive driving practices.

Education and Experience

Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate journey-level skill in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

Foreign Degrees

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

License Certificates/Credentials

Valid and insurable California drivers license.

Working Conditions

Vehicle and equipment shop environment; subject to heavy lifting, working around grease, exhaust fumes and gasoline and working with welding equipment.

Position Description
