Bard College is seeking applications for the position of Director of Human Resources. The Human Resources department, located at our main campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, is uniquely positioned as a dynamic and critical resource for Bard’s expansive network which includes graduate, undergraduate, and early college programs. The incumbent will serve as a key member of the Human Resources leadership team. Working closely with and reporting to the Vice President of Administration, the incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the office, managing and administering the employee benefits programs for the College, and supporting the Human Resources Department’s mission which is to maximize the potential of our greatest asset – our employees.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and lead the Annandale based Human Resources team to achieve high performance and continuous growth and development.
  • Develop, communicate, and implement progressive human resources policies, procedures, and initiatives, in alignment with industry best practices, standards, and applicable federal, State, and local laws, and assist managers in the interpretation and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Work closely with the Office of Title IX and Non-Discrimination and outside counsel, as needed, to resolve personnel and legal issues.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of formal and informal staff performance appraisal systems.; assist supervisors in motivating techniques and appropriate corrective action and progressive discipline process when necessary while ensuring fairness, equity and proper documentation.
  • Develop and implement department operational objectives, policies, and procedures; formulate training programs and workshops for the continuous improvement of the department; develop and deliver training programs and workshops for staff at large.
  • Oversee the administration of all Bard College sponsored group benefits in conjunction with the College’s benefits broker and the benefits coordinator; respond to employee questions, researching employee issues, and monitoring and coordinating benefits communications.
  • Supervise and manage the planning and production of benefit related events, including open enrollment, the annual benefits and wellness fair, and benefit-education meetings/presentations. May also coordinate events related to employee Wellness programs.
  • Manages annual insurance renewal and requests for proposal (RFP), as needed, and participates in vendor evaluation, negotiations, and implementation activities.
  • Manages all aspects of the 403(b)-retirement program, keeping up to date with regulatory requirements, monitoring the plan for compliance, including managing the annual audit.
  • Prepare reports and conduct analysis both at scheduled intervals and on-demand as needed.
  • Other duties, projects and committee/task force participation as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or related field.
  • 7-10 years Human Resources experience in progressively challenging human resources leadership positions.
  • Experience and knowledge related to employment or labor law, including employment of non-citizens.
  • Experienced strategic, forward-thinking, creative leader with demonstrated sound judgment.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.
  • Ability to set short and long-range goals with action steps for accomplishing results.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and promote a positive working environment, spirit of cooperation, and positive reactions to change and conflict resolution.
  • Depth of knowledge of laws and best practices related benefit plan administration.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of compliance requirements, federal, and state(s) regulations, filing and compliance requirements, including but not limited to ACA, ADA, COBRA, ERISA, FMLA, PFL, OSHA, Medicare, Social Security, workers compensation, and DOL requirements.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong critical thinking, creative problem solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Advanced competency in Microsoft and/or Google Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Human Resources or related business discipline.
  • Experience working in a non-profit organization, preferably in a Higher Educational setting.
  • Competency with Ellucian BANNER and/or ADP Workforce Now, or similar HRIS systems.

Salary: $95,000 - $125,000

This salary range reflects the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for the position at the time of the job posting. Salary decisions are dependent on several factors including but not limited to market and organizational considerations, experience, and qualifications of a selected candidate as well as internal and external equity.

Position Details:

The Managing Director of Human Resources position is an exempt, year-round, in-person appointment. Typical hours are Monday – Friday 9 am-5 pm on site in Annandale-on-Hudson NY, with occasional nights and/or weekends as needed based on the requirements of the position.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Typical work is performed indoors in a typical office environment. Requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards, sit for periods of time, walk short distances, and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
