POSITION SUMMARY:

The Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce provides leadership, direction, and management for all aspects of Chamber activities. Executive Director serves as a non-voting member of the Board’s Executive Committee. The Executive Director directly reports to the Chairperson of the Board of Directors and communicates on a regular basis.

FUNCTIONS – Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Overseeing Business Activities of the Chamber: Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the major areas of business including Department of Licensing (Boat, Automotive, Fishing/Hunting), Visitor Services, Membership, and Community/Advocacy. This involves setting goals, measuring progress and ensuring fiscal growth alongside limited staffing.
  • Board Relations: The Executive Director is responsible to maintain strong relationships, communicate in a professional manner and provide leadership necessary to garner the full engagement of the board members. Other board relations duties include implementing Board plans and programs in accordance with Board direction..
  • Financial Performance: The Executive Director has fiduciary responsibility for the organization and develops the Chamber budget in conjunction with the Treasurer and the Executive Committee. The Executive Director shall implement and manage the budget as approved by the Board of Directors which includes providing monthly financial statements.
  • Fundraising and Membership: The Executive Director serves as the front line on securing sponsorship, membership, and other sources of revenue. The Executive Director will be directly responsible for securing sponsorships, membership, and other revenue streams for the Chamber of Commerce. This role will also serve as the first line of contact for all communications and community engagement including the weekly newsletter.
  • Department of Licensing: The Executive Director ensures the current licensing contracts with the Department of Fish and Wildlife and Department of Licensing (Auto/Boat) remain in good standing, are well staffed, and flourish. The Executive Director will look for ways to leverage and grow this work.
  • Visitor Services: The Executive Director oversees staffing and volunteers who seek to make Bainbridge Island a welcoming space for the thousands of tourists visiting our island. This includes maintaining collaborative relationships with Visit Bainbridge and other entities, as well as operating the Visitor Kiosk at the Ferry Terminal.
  • Community and Advocacy: Collaborate with the Board and volunteers to regularly convene and manage the Chamber’s relationships and advocacy/public policy efforts with local, regional, state, and federal government bodies to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Events: Secure funding and provide the overall vision for Grand Old 4th and Business Awards while working collaboratively with contracted event management support.
  • Staff: Executive Director is responsible for all Human Resource functions including but not limited to the hiring, supervision, evaluation, and termination of all staff.
  • Other duties as assigned: Perform other duties assigned by the Chair, Executive Committee, Board of Directors that are consistent with the Chamber’s mission, vision and policies

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Experience: Minimum of five years leadership experience for a business or nonprofit organization. Direct P&L responsibility strongly preferred with a track record of achieving organizational goals and delivering results.
  • Management: Familiarity with running a nonprofit and understanding the dynamics of a chamber of commerce or a similar membership organization that serves and advocates on behalf of its members.
  • Leadership: Have demonstrated leadership skills setting goals and objectives, planning and tracking multiple projects, and holding stakeholders accountable. Show leadership for embracing diversity and success in working with the community.
  • Fundraising & Growth: Demonstrated ability to communicate a vision, raise resources, grow membership, and deliver increased revenue for the organization.
  • Supervision: Ability to attract, retain, and develop excellent staff in a team-oriented environment.
  • Communication – Possess superior communication and presentation skills along with strong listening, written, and verbal skills. Experience establishing positive and proactive communication with Boards, staff, membership, public sector, civic groups, and general members of the community. Proven experience with traditional and online media.
  • Collaboration: Proven record for engaging, partnering, and building alliances with a wide range of constituencies that includes business leaders, elected officials, and leaders from other organizations.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work environment is dictated by activities of the Chamber. The Executive Director shall generally be available during regular operating hours of the Chamber (8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday - public hours from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm). The Executive Director shall set her/his own schedule provided that the Executive Director shall complete all duties, responsibilities, and management functions of the job description in a timely manner. The position is subject to work outside traditional hours and may have extended operating days. There is some, though infrequent, business travel required. This person is responsible for reporting to the Chairperson of the Board any issues, concerns or questions that affect this organization. They will perform all other duties as directed by the Board Chair.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $90,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
