The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is currently hiring for an Emergency Preparedness Specialist (Sr. Environmental Scientist, Specialist) within the Center for Environmental Health’s Environmental Management Branch.
About the Environmental Management Branch:
The Environmental Management Branch (EMB). EMB regulates the medical waste industry, pre-harvest commercial shellfish operations, and recreational health (public swimming pools, ocean beaches and organized camps); provides sanitary surveillance of state institutions; administers the Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) program; oversees radiological cleanup at military base closure facilities, coordinates the State's Indoor Radon Program, the Medical Waste Management Program and the California Department of Public Health's (CDPH’s) Nuclear Emergency Response Program.
About the Role:
The Emergency Preparedness Specialist (Sr. Environmental Scientist, Specialist) serves as the coordinator and primary emergency preparedness planner for the development, implementation, and coordination of emergency operations associated with the Environmental Management Branch’s programs and general environmental health preparedness programs. Duties include coordinating directly with management and program staff; other management and program staff within the Division of Radiation Safety and Environmental Management (DRSEM); the Center for Environmental Health (CEH); and other Departmental programs to integrate emergency response plans and operations. The selected candidate will prepare and draft plans, provide response coordination, conduct outreach, develop and deliver training, coordinates and participates in exercises and attends meetings focused on emergency preparedness.

· Coordinates the development and implementation of emergency response and recovery plans to address public health emergencies.
· Develops and delivers information through training, outreach, and exercises for volunteers, local public health departments, environmental health departments, state employees, and other emergency response personnel.
· Develops, revises, and updates plans and procedures; prepares correspondence, special reports, and other assignments as needed.
· Provides assistance to the Center for Preparedness and Responses and the CDPH Office of Public Affairs in developing messages, fact sheets, and guidance documents associated with emergencies that directly impact the Environmental Management Branch’s programs.
Desirable Qualifications:
· Ability to provide training, outreach, and exercises.
· Ability to write technical documents with clarity.
· Familiarity with and knowledge of local public health and environmental health agencies, programs, and mutual assistance.
· Ability to assist local agencies with field activities such as disaster response or cleanup oversight.
· Ability to represent CDPH and participate in conferences, workshops, and meetings.
· Flexibility and self-discipline to work independently or as a team member.
· Ability to understand and carry out written and oral directions.
· Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and complete assignments within specific time frames.
· Ability to exercise good judgement and tact.
· Capacity to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
This position is located in Sacramento, CA and may be eligible for a hybrid-telework schedule with some in-office requirements.

Pay: $7,336.00 - $9,126.00 per month
