Position Summary

We are seeking to fill the position of a Friends Executive Director. The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for steering the organization and carrying out its mission. The ED is hired by and reports directly to the Board of Directors(Board). While the Board is responsible for setting policy and providing strategic and financial oversight and direction, the ED makes day-to-day operational decisions. The ED has discretionary authority to implement the policies and directives of the Board, and is responsible to the Board for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives.

The ED will initially develop deep knowledge of the Friends partnership with DFNWR and surrounding community in order to develop insights related to programing, operations, and business planning. This position will work closely with DFNWR to make the Refuge a trusted community asset reflective of the entire community; maintaining equity and collaboration in pursuit of our shared conservation mission.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership/Community Liaison

  • Build up Friends’ organizational structure and engagement
  • Collaborate with Board to refine vision and strategic plans

Fundraising

  • Nature Store management
  • Grant writing and administration
  • Business planning for strategic growth
  • Oversight of financial administration and budgeting

Operational Planning and Management

  • Coordinate planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs and projects
  • Supervision and administration for volunteers, staff, and paid consultants
  • Work with Board to develop annual budget

Personnel Management

  • Recruit, train, and manage volunteers, interns, and/or staff
  • Point of Contact for all contracts
  • Collaborate with DFNWR to supervise shared interns or staff

Communications and Marketing

  • Lead all internal and external communications
  • Website management
  • Social media management
  • Recruit/develop community partners in collaboration with DFNWR
  • Planning and implementation of Friends events and coordinated presence at Refuge events

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Relevant leadership experience.
  • History of working in and building a diverse and engaged volunteer base.
  • Experience with financial planning, organizational budgeting, and managing diverse income streams.
  • Experience with fundraising campaigns.
  • Grant writing experience and success preferred.
  • Strategic planning experience, including implementation at the organizational level.
  • Experience with a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient working with Google Suite and business management software.
  • Position requires some evening and weekend work.
  • Must undergo a government background check if selected.
  • Possess valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle (mileage compensated at federal rate).
  • Willing to work both in and outdoors, exposure to wildlife, uneven terrain, insects and plants.
  • Spanish language skills are preferred but not required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $45,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
