Established in 1970, SVCC is one of the 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System. The Christanna Campus near Alberta and the John H. Daniel Campus near Keysville serve ten counties and one city – the largest community college service region in the state. In 1985, SVCC opened the Southside Virginia Education Center. The college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate degrees. SVCC is dedicated to the belief that all citizens should be given an opportunity to acquire an educational foundation which develops and extends their skills and knowledge. The college’s goal is to provide diverse instructional programs ranging from developmental studies to associate degree curricula in academic, technical, and lifelong education. Through various activities, students will also have the opportunity to develop their roles and responsibilities as participants in a changing society.
Southside Virginia Community College is currently seeking qualified applicants for the restricted part-time position of Nursing Education Retention Specialist to be located at the Estes Center in Chase City, VA. The Retention Specialist is the provider of resources to help ensure the ability of students to succeed in the nursing program and obtain respective licensure. Concurrently, this position is a vital liaison between faculty, administration, and the students. This position is for 1 year and is subject to continued federal funding.
Primary duties include but are not limited to:
- Assist and collaborate in the development, implementation and management of policies and programs to increase student retention and NCLEX success in the nursing programs
- Utilize nursing program data to guide nursing program remediation efforts in
collaboration with nursing faculty Administer the attrition risk survey and analyze results to identify at risk students in coordination with faculty - Incorporate current nursing program retention initiatives into SVCC nursing programs. Refer students to SVCC student services for additional resources and outside counseling services if needed
- Develop and deliver scheduled study skills sessions and workshops to meet the needs of nursing students who are at risk
- Assist with advising, admission, orientation and registration for nursing programs
- Assist nursing students with remediation portfolio development along with faculty to support effective learning plans
- Track remediation student from re-entry to program exit
- Coordinate and conduct clinical remediation with the faculty member if needed
- Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Nursing, Allied Health and Natural Science
SVCC is located in a rural setting of rolling hills, pine and hardwood forests, and farmland. There is easy access to nearby metropolitan Richmond, Virginia, the state’s capital, as well as Raleigh, North Carolina, and Lynchburg, Virginia. The area is famous for its two lakes, Gaston and Kerr, and a multitude of state and national parks which offer recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating, skiing, jet-skiing, hiking, horseback riding, picnics, and relaxation. The area also offers sports arenas for baseball, softball, soccer and beautiful golf courses. There are cultural activities including various theaters and arts councils offering concerts, plays, and live entertainment, and there are many local festivals held throughout the year.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing
- Must hold an unencumbered license for the Commonwealth of Virginia
- or have a multistate licensure privilege
- Effective oral and written communication skills, strong human relations skills, effective organizational skills
- Ability to relate to a diverse student population
- Flexibility in handling multiple tasks, ability to exercise sound judgment in handling confidential and sensitive issues
- Knowledge of teaching methodologies effective with students enrolled in
nursing programs - Current computer skills using word processing, excel, database management and presentation
- Research and data analysis skills
- Must have two years of current direct patient care experience
- Ability to uphold the mission and philosophy of the nursing program and Southside Virginia Community College
- Experience with implementing and evaluating student success and retention strategies in a community college or university setting
- Experience working with undeserved college student populations
- Experience using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) to develop spreadsheets, reports, and correspondence for diverse professional audiences and purposes
- Understanding of student development theories
- Ability to demonstrate excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to interpret and apply SVCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
- Ability to track data, outcomes, and present information in compliance with federal requirements
- Ability to address equity and inclusion as a priority in program implementation and decision making
- Ability to communicate program concepts and outcomes to diverse individuals and groups
- Community College teaching experience and prior student advising experience or case management experience preferred
- Masters in Nursing Preferred
