WORKING CONDITIONS: Include on campus, online, remote, hybrid. Dependent on needs of the department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Academic Preparedness: A current and comprehensive knowledge of the discipline providing a foundation for effective advising in a community college setting. Experiential Background: Three (3) years' experience in centralized professional academic advising or admissions at a college/university required. Technological Proficiency: Strong data management skills required This standard may be waived at the time of hire, but the newly hired academic advisor will be required to prepare a plan with the supervisor designed to achieve the standard by the end of the probationary period.

Supervision
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to department administration. SUPERVISION GIVEN: May give direction adjunct advisors as assigned.

 

 

Job Function

Academic Advisors provide services to enrolled students and persons seeking information about enrollment procedures. They provide academic advising services to enrolled students who have identified an educational/career goal.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintaining updated and accurate information about Macomb’s degree/certificate programs and transfer information.
  • Assist students with program planning and course selection.
  • Participate in outreach and information providing activities as appropriate.
  • Providing on a walk-in and group basis, general college information to new as well as prospective students.
  • Conducting the informational portion of the new student orientation.
  • Providing specific academic information about Macomb degree/certificate programs for all decided students.
  • Providing transfer information for all students who have decided on a transfer institution and a college major.
  • Referring to professional counseling faculty when students indicate they are indecisive or undecided.
  • Referring students to appropriate college or community resources for assistance.
  • Interpreting college policies, procedures and students rights and responsibilities.
  • May participate with various college committees as needed.
  • Respond to online and phone inquiries from students
  • Interpreting placement test scores and suggesting appropriate courses based upon test results.
  • Working with Associate Dean of Counseling and Academic Advising, Director of Counseling, Academic Advising and Student Access Services, and professional faculty in planning and implementing new and creative ways to deliver services.
  • Conducting unofficial degree audits.
  • Performing other duties as needed.

 

Education

Bachelors degree required, masters degree preferred
