Essential Job Duties

This postdoctoral research scholar will conduct epidemiologic analyses of the GenX Exposure Study data so that we can provide results to the affected communities in a timely fashion.

Duties and Responsibilities

The post-doc will conduct statistical analysis and prepare manuscripts for publications. The post-doc will also assist in preparing lay summaries for community members. Topics will focus on PFAS and health outcomes and require ability to conduct longitudinal analyses and use models that include multiple PFAS.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Occasional travel to Wilmington and Fayetteville, NC for community meetings and data collection.

Work Schedule

M-F 40 hours a week. Some evenings for community meetings.

Department Required Skills

The GenX Exposure study is an environmental epidemiology study of residents in Wilmington, Fayetteville, and Pittsboro, NC, whose water has been contaminated with per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) for up to 40 years. Biological and environmental samples have been collected and up to 12 PFAS (both newly identified and historically used) have been identified in the blood of study participants. The project is community based and report back of findings is key. Research team includes epidemiologists, statisticians, engineers, toxicologists, physicians, and study and data managers. Excellent written and oral communication skills.

The postdoctoral fellow will conduct epidemiologic analyses of the GenX exposure study data, prepare manuscripts for publication, and present findings at both community and scientific meetings. Statistical analyses will involve analyses of chemical mixtures as well as repeated measures analysis. The fellow will be part of an active research team and will participate in data collection and community report back as appropriate. Fellow will have the opportunity to work with undergraduate and graduate students. Opportunity exists to develop new research ideas using stored biological specimens or additional data collection.

Occasional travel to Pittsboro, Wilmington, and Fayetteville, NC for community meetings and data collection.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Doctorate in Environmental Epidemiology, Statistics, or similar training
  • Statistical analysis including linear and logistic regression as well as multilevel modeling for analysis of mixtures. Experience with SAS or R.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Training with regard to data security protections.
  • Experience with Community-Engaged Research or environmental justice related projects.
  • Experience with human subjects research (CITI training or similar).
  • Data visualization experience
  • Training in environmental exposure assessment Experience working with minority and underserved communities in a research of public health setting.
