Essential Job Duties
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Assistant Director of Landscape Services to oversee the maintenance and care of over 2,000 acres at NC State University. This position is responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational management across multiple areas, including turf, irrigation, horticulture, stormwater systems, green roofs, and greenhouse operations. The Assistant Director will lead a team of 90 staff members, promoting efficient operations, cultivating a positive work culture, and ensuring a safe, well-maintained campus environment. The successful candidate will develop and implement a clear vision for the department, work collaboratively with faculty and students on innovative initiatives, and play a key role in advancing the university’s landscape and sustainability goals.

Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
- Lead and manage a team of 90 staff members, including five direct reports, providing guidance, training, and opportunities for professional development
- Develop and implement strategic goals for the landscape services department, ensuring alignment with the university’s broader goals
- Manage inclement weather response to ensure campus safety and accessibility
- Collaborate with students, faculty, and campus partners on design and build projects, providing technical expertise and support
- Manage service agreements and oversee a departmental budget of $6.5 million, ensuring responsible financial management
- Lead customer service efforts by addressing concerns proactively and fostering strong relationships with internal and external partners
- Maintain and improve safety protocols, working to reduce risks and enhance workplace safety
- Serve as a primary point of contact for landscape services, representing the department in university-wide initiatives and external organizations
- Provide mentorship and set high performance standards, ensuring accountability and continuous improvement
- Analyze accident trends and collaborate with direct reports to implement corrective measures, ensuring compliance with OSHA and DEQ regulations
- Manage professional development opportunities, including the Certified Landscape Technician program and the development of the Horticulture Technician progression program
- Develop long-term strategies for budget adjustments, including staffing levels and supply management, to meet annual financial allocations
- Works closely with staff to promote strong internal communication, ensuring that all employees are kept informed about policies, procedures, and opportunities
- Maintain professional relationships with customers, negotiating service agreements, and managing contracts, while ensuring regular communication with building liaisons and other stakeholders
- Set clear goals and objectives for employee safety, and driving continuous improvement in this area
- Proactively identify areas for improvement and implement solutions to potential safety concerns, fostering a culture of safety and accountability throughout the organization
Other Responsibilities
- Initiates and maintains communication with external organizations such as PGMS, ECGMLA, and APPA, positioning the department as a leader in the field of Grounds Management
Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in the area of assignment, of which at least one is supervisory or in a lead-worker capacity; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications
- Comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of arboriculture, general landscape architecture, design and construction
- Comprehensive knowledge of arboricultural practices, materials and equipment related to landscape care and maintenance
- Comprehensive knowledge of modern arboriculture used in university programs
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing for effectively conveying information at all levels
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience management of turf, irrigation, horticulture, stormwater systems, green roofs, and greenhouse operations
- Certification as a Certified Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture, Tree Risk Assessment Arborist, or Board-Certified Master Arborist certification required or the ability to obtain within one year
- Experienced in landscape management, asset inventory, and development review, with a strong ability to craft goals and objectives, develop responsive strategies, engage the public, and manage projects effectively while forecasting program changes and adapting strategies to meet emerging needs
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with campus and local community

- Valid driver’s license required
- North Carolina driver’s license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
