The School of Medicine (SOM) is one of three professional schools in Health sciences. Within the UC San Diego School of Medicine, there are approximately 20 departments, 1,700+ faculty, 600 students, and 1,000 residents and fellows. Annual expenditures for the School of Medicine are ~$1 billion, with research expenditures ~$400M.

The SOM Dean's Office - Business Affairs unit is responsible for the financial and business operations of the School of Medicine and Dean's Office. This includes but is not limited to School of Medicine initiatives, tripartite mission integration, financial and funds flow planning, standards development, overall financial operations, and business partnership with the School of Medicine Departments.
Under the general direction of the Director for Strategic Operations, the incumbent will play an integral role within the SOM Dean Office - Business Affairs' finance team. This role utilizes the skills of a seasoned, experienced professional to support the financial management of the Dean's Office resources ($120M+ annually), support the annual budget process for the SOM departments ($1B+ annual dollars), and partner with SOM departments on financial initiatives.
In the role, the incumbent will utilize data management tools and business processes to support the oversight of Dean's Office commitments and funds flow, annual budget reporting, multi-year financial forecasting, perform complex modeling of indirect cost (IDC), and other financial models and stewardship with departments (e.g., SOM endowed chairs, gifts / endowments portfolios). Additionally, this role provides administrative and financial expertise to support the SOM departments in the development of operating budgets, performs budgetary and financial analysis, making recommendations based on findings. The incumbent will also partner with the SOM Departments to perform routine analysis on financial performance.
Provides analytical, reporting, and transactional support in management of Dean's Office resources, gifts / endowment portfolio in partnership with SOM departments. Incumbent will support special projects, perform financial modeling/analysis, and provide support to the departments, Director, and team members as needed.
Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of industry practices and organizational policies and procedures; resolves a wide range of issues in imaginative as well as practical ways. Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Contacts are both internal and external to the department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSSeven years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor's degree in related area plus three years of related experience/training.
Thorough knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems. Advanced knowledge of finance and budget policies, practices and systems; budgeting and reporting techniques; fund accounting; accounting and bookkeeping.
Ability to independently gather required information to organize, and perform financial analysis assignments. Experience in analyzing complex issues or problems, formulating and implementing creative and appropriate solutions having evaluated all risks and consequences.
Proven ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner. Ability to speak in group settings and provide training to large groups. Possess skills of tact, poise, diplomacy, and confidentiality with a diverse population of staff and faculty in a high pressure and demanding environment. Expert ability to effectively communicate complex information to multiple audiences.
Proven ability using spreadsheet and database software for complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports. Ability to identify, collect, analyze, and report on complex data. Demonstrated ability using multiple spreadsheet and database software tools to synthesize and integrate information for highly complex, strategic financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports. Ability to do end-to-end data pulls, financial modeling, and analysis.
Proven interpersonal skills with peers throughout the organization; strong service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. Proven ability using organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment. Demonstrated ability to provide strong customer service to departments.

Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources. Proven ability to initiate, track and manage complex issues and projects to completion.
Experience with budget development and financial performance analysis.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $77,000 - $139,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $36.88 - $66.67
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
