Alabama State University, University College, Upward Bound Programs invites applications to fill the position of Counselor. Under direct supervision of the UB Coordinator, the selected candidate will serve as a counselor for students in the UB TRIO Programs, and assist in planning and implementing the activities according to the specifications of the grant and the TRIO regulations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Recruits new students for the program and assist with the processing of new student applications
- Assists in planning, organizing, implementing, reviewing, and evaluation of progress
- Attends professional meetings designed to improve the program
- Assesses student's academic progress in school
- Develops a supportive relationship with the students
- Assists students in developing curriculum and career plans
- Attends departmental meeting and participates in other AD Hoc committees as assigned by the Dean
- Attends annual training as directed by the coordinator and approved by the TRIO Director to develop new skills and enhance knowledge of academic enrichment services
- Documents and tracks each student participant's contact
- Develops and monitors students SSCP/IEP to ensure participants are reaching desired academic goals and remain active in the program
- Maintains regular contact with school personnel regarding students’ needs and progress
- Develops and presents appropriate seminars to students and parents based on grant specifications
- Conducts workshops on group counseling, career information and studying, test taking skills, etc.
- Develops and maintains a system of community, university and program resources which can be available to students
- Maintains regular contact with students, parents and/or school personnel regarding students' needs
- Becomes involved in the affairs and organizations which have an impact on students' lives
- Participates with other central staff persons and agencies in order to provide concerted and coordinated efforts in support of students
- Assists in planning and implementing the Summer Activities/Residential Programs
- Participates with other central staff in planning and implementing the logistics and content of the summer programs
- Maintains regular contact with participants during the summer program, and perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in Education, Math, Science or related field, and experience working with youth, low-income student and ethnic minority groups, promoting educational opportunities, admissions and financial aid information are required.
